How do I check a word?
Open Lex and type any word in the search field. The result card updates as you type with a Valid or Not Valid badge, the tile-point value, and the word's definition.
Why isn't my word found?
Lex uses the SOWPODS / Collins Scrabble Words list — the international tournament dictionary. It contains roughly 268,000 words including most British, American, and slang spellings, plus archaic and regional terms. If a word isn't found, it likely isn't legal in tournament Scrabble.
What dictionary is this based on?
The word list is SOWPODS (also called Collins Scrabble Words / CSW), used in international Scrabble tournaments outside North America. Definitions are bundled from Princeton's WordNet 3.1, public-domain Webster entries, derived forms, and Lex coverage fallbacks — no internet required.
Why does a valid word sometimes show a fallback entry?
Some regional, archaic, inflected, or Scrabble-specific SOWPODS words do not have concise public-domain glosses in Lex's bundled sources. Lex still shows an offline entry for those words, clearly marked as a SOWPODS coverage fallback rather than pretending to know a meaning it cannot verify.
How do I remove ads?
Tap “Remove Ads” in Settings. This is a one-time purchase. If you've already bought it on another device or after reinstalling, use the “Restore purchase” button in Settings.
Does Lex work offline?
Yes. The full word list and definitions database are bundled in the app. Lex works on a plane, in a basement, or anywhere with no signal.
Does Lex collect my data?
No. Word lookups are processed entirely on your device. Recent lookups are stored locally and can be cleared at any time from the Recent tab. Lex does not require an account and does not transmit your queries.
How are tile points calculated?
Tile values follow the standard English Scrabble distribution: A/E/I/L/N/O/R/S/T/U = 1, D/G = 2, B/C/M/P = 3, F/H/V/W/Y = 4, K = 5, J/X = 8, Q/Z = 10. Lex sums the raw tile values; double/triple letter and word multipliers are not included.
